Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to become creative and instilled by the arts. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed during the working day to pursue her passion for the arts, literature and theater. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an effective tool for social change. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was knowledgeable about society and taught her how to use art as a method to express herself. DuVernay was born living with family members in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home that her father owned. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights marches that were historic across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama were later the inspiration to create a documentary about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her graduation certificate of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was in the college. DuVernay began as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given duty of looking after the residence and scrutinizing the rubbish of one jurors. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism due to the work she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in the field of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio after college. In 1999, she launched her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. The company also launched a variety of promotion and lifestyle networks like her own Urban Beauty Collective.
